50. You Built This. Now Protect It.

This is the final post in The Human Asset series.

When I wrote the first post, I said it was a conversation I had been waiting to have. One that draws on thirty years of experience that most people do not know I carry.

I meant that. Not as a credential statement. As an acknowledgment that this particular conversation has been waiting for its moment. Not just the conversation about individual insurance products. The whole conversation. About the question that comes before any product. Trade on or wind up? About why a funded wind-up is not defeat but care. About what a genuine trade-on position actually requires. About the human asset that sits at the centre of every business, unprotected, while the IT systems and the premises and the cyber security are all carefully managed.

I have been in this industry long enough to have helped design the products that address these risks. Long enough to have built the education frameworks that trained the advisers now working in this space. Long enough to have sat across from hundreds of business owners, first as an industry professional and then as a Chamber of Commerce judge, and seen the same pattern repeat itself with an almost astonishing consistency.

The humans are not protected.

Not because the solutions do not exist. They do. Not because business owners would dismiss the need if they understood it. In my experience they almost never do. Because the conversation has not happened at the scale it needs to. Until now.

What this series has given you.

You now have a complete picture of the Human Asset Risk landscape for NZ business.

You understand why the question of trade-on or wind-up must come before any other. You know why a funded wind-up is one of the most responsible decisions a business owner can make. You understand what a genuine trade-on position requires structurally and financially. You know what ACC does and does not cover, and why the gap it leaves for business owners is more significant than most people realise. You understand Key Person vulnerability and how to calculate your exposure. You know what a personal guarantee actually means and what protects against it. You understand how income protection works differently for business owners. You know what a funded Buy/Sell Agreement does and why an unfunded one is not enough. You understand the role of Business Overhead Cover. And you have a clear picture of what a properly protected business looks like from the inside.

That is not general financial education. That is thirty years of expertise, distilled into thirteen posts, available to every NZ business owner who needs it.

The next step.

If anything in this series has resonated, let me know and I will send you the Structural Triage Scan where the practical work begins. Ten minutes. Four sections. A clear Red, Amber or Green verdict on your Revenue, Debt, Equity and Personal Income vulnerability.

If your scan comes back Amber or Red in any section, I would like to invite you to a complimentary 45-minute Business Risk Architecture Consultation.

We will review your scan results together. We will work through the trade-on or wind-up question specifically for your business. We will map what a complete, properly structured protection architecture looks like for your situation. And we will determine whether a full Business Risk Planning Questionnaire should be completed to develop that architecture in detail.

No products presented without context. No pressure toward any particular outcome. Just a focused, expert conversation about what you have built, what you have decided, and what it would take to protect it properly in either scenario.
